DCU James Gunn Unveils DCU Slate "Chapter One: Gods And Monsters"

DC Universe Co-CEO James Gunn recently released a video introducing several upcoming DC Studios projects centered around a theme called "Chapter One: Gods And Monsters." Some might think the name is related to the DC movie "Chapter One: Gods And Monsters." There is actually no direct link to DC Universe's new plan. The film is part of the DC Universe Animated Original Movies line. It serves as an example of the unique and thought-provoking storytelling that the DC Universe can provide. DC Comics universe is explored in a bold, innovative way through the film, exploring what might happen if the world's most powerful heroes turned out to be more than they appear to be. It is a testament to DC's commitment to delivering high-quality and diverse content that fans can expect this type of imaginative storytelling from the new DC Universe.

James Gunn also acknowledged that DC Studios disengaged films and TV shows for a long time. One of his objectives on the company agenda is to join the force and reconnect DCU in film, television, gaming, and animation.

Here are the details of the ten projects.

CREATURE COMMANDOS: Animated Series

James Gunn said he finished writing all the episodes. And he emphasized the value of consistency of characters. Therefore, they have planned to deploy the same actors to play their voices as those who play them in movies and tv shows.

WALLER

Viola Davis Viola Davis will play the fictional character Amanda Waller. The series will follow Waller teaming up with members of the Team Peacemaker. Co-Written by Crystal Henry, the producer for Watchman, and Jeremy Carver, the creator of the Doom Patrol is a fantastic story, James Gunn said he is excited to debut the show.

SUPERMAN: LEGACY

The film "Superman: Legacy" is scheduled to debut on July 11, 2025, and it will be the starting point for the DC Universe (DCU). According to an exclusive interview in Variety, producer Peter Safran said the film will not be going with the origin story. Conversely, it will explore the character of Superman as he tries to find a balance between his Kryptonian heritage and human upbringing. Safran stated that the Man of Steel represents truth, justice, and the American way, and he is a symbol of kindness in a world where kindliness is considered outdated. On top of that, James Gunn, who is known for his work in the Guardians of the Galaxy franchise, will be writing the film.

LANTERNS

The "Lanterns" TV series is an HBO show reminiscent of "True Detective." The show will concentrate on two of the Green Lantern corps' most well-known members, Hal Jordan and John Stewart, as they delve into a mystery. Gunn remarked the show plays a significant role in the long run and that the story will stir up other film and TV projects. Gunn summed up the project as a "terrestrial-based TV show."

THE AUTHORITY

The film "Superman: Legacy" will be followed by "The Authority," a movie about a group of superhumans with a unique approach to saving the world. The characters come from the Wildstorm imprint of DC Comics and DC Studios. Gunn said they wish to incorporate these characters into the DC Universe and interact with the primary DCU characters. Unlike typical superhero stories of heroes versus villains, "The Authority" will showcase characters who believe they must take matters into their own hands to save the world. Gunn described The Authority as "a group of superheroes who think the world is broken and they want to fix it by any means necessary," giving the audience a different perspective of being superheroes.

PARADISE LOST

According to Gunn, this "Game of Thrones-like" series takes place on the island of Themyscira prior to the birth of Diana, better known as Wonder Woman. The story focuses on the political maneuvering within a society of all women. The TV Show will be reminiscent of the "Paradise Island Lost" comic series by Phil Jimenez and George Pérez, which chronicled a civil war on Themyscira with Wonder Woman involved.

THE BRAVE AND THE BOLD MOVIE

"The Brave and the Bold" will feature the DCU's version of Batman, distinct from the one portrayed by Robert Pattinson in "The Batman." The series will introduce the "Bat-family," starting with Robin. This Robin is Damian Wayne, who Gunn described as their favorite Robin, being both an assassin and Bruce Wayne's biological son. The project is based on the Batman comics by Grant Morrison.

Booster Gold

The DCU will venture into comedy with "Booster Gold." Safran referred to Booster as "a failure from the future who manipulates time travel technology to pose as a superhero in the present." According to Gunn, "Booster Gold" is about a superhero with imposter syndrome.

SUPERGIRL: WOMAN OF TOMORROW

The film "Woman of Tomorrow" is based on the 2021 and 2022 comics run of the same name by Tom King. Unlike Superman, who was sent to Earth as an infant and raised by loving parents, Supergirl was raised on a piece of Krypton. She watched everyone around her disappear in tragic ways for the first 14 years of her life, making her a much more jaded character. The movie will premiere in 2027.

  • SWAMP THING

"Swamp Thing" will tell the story of the green plant creature through a horror lens. Gunn showed his passion as a producer and wished to bring something unique and creative to his work. He said it is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to do something very different.

These new projects have generated a lot of excitement among fans of the DC Universe. James Gunn is known for his unique approach to storytelling, and many fans are eager to see how his vision will shape the future of these classic characters. The new slate of projects promises to bring fresh perspectives and diverse characters to the DC Universe, and we look forward to seeing these new stories unfold.
